After 10 matches UD Lanzarote remain unbeaten and are in third position, just one point adrift from league leaders UD Las Palmas B, in the Tercera division (fifth tier). Ian lane reports.

On the 22nd of October Lanzarote travelled to Fuerteventura to play CD Unión Puerto. The Rojillos dominated the match and were cruising to victory by three goals to one with 10 minutes remaining. The home side then pulled a goal back, but Lanzarote held on to the delight of the travelling fans.

Lanzarote’s 100% home record ended on the 29th of October against a stubborn UD Villa Santa Brígida side in an unusually quiet match that ended goalless.

The following week, the Rojillos (The Reds) had the daunting task of travelling to Gran Canaria to face UD Las Palmas B, who had won six matches on the bounce and were top of the table.

The league leaders were the better team in the first half and went into the break with a 1-0 advantage. Lanzarote came out fighting in the second half and deservedly levelled in the 86th minute through Traoré. The Rojillos were within a whisker of taking all three points, but importantly kept their unbeaten run going.

On the 12th of November, on a glorious sunny day with temperatures in the high 20s, Lanzarote returned to winning ways, beating fifth placed side CF San Mateo 2-1. The Rojillos were outstanding in the first half and led 2-0 but the Gran Canarian side came out for the second period with a new lease of life.

Early in the second half and in the space of just four minutes the visitors were rightly awarded two penalties. Keeper Alejandro superbly saved the first and even though the second went into the same left-hand corner, he couldn’t prevent San Mateo pulling a goal back to bring the game to life at 2-1.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men with half an hour remaining, but this did not slow down their determination as Lanzarote were pinned back. It may not have been pretty, but the Rojillos hung on to move within a point of the B teams of Tenerife and Las Palmas.

It is simple to watch a match as the local bus number 3 goes back and forth every half hour from Puerto Del Carmen and Costa Teguise to Arrecife and drops you almost outside the stadium. Entrance price is 10€ adults and 8€ pensioners which you pay at the gate. All children under 16 are admitted free of charge.
