Firm favourites here at Gazette, the Mióptica optical centre has been a byword for quality and expertise in Playa Blanca for eight years.

Daniel and Anita set up Mióptica in Playa Blanca eight years ago, and it’s a terrific example of how hard work, expert attention and great service makes a small business successful.

“It wasn’t that easy at first,” says Daniel. “A lot of people would still head up to the other resorts or Arrecife to compare prices. But when they realised what we offered we started to build a loyal customer base”.

Lanzarote lifestyles mean that opticians have to cater to all types of customers, from the elderly to children, from those looking for everyday visual aids to athletes. On a sunny isle like this, sunglasses are a necessity, not a luxury. “There’s no excuse not to wear them,” says Daniel, “They preserve your visual health and are available in all types, with graduated lenses, polarisation to reduce glare, and specialist frames for fashion or sport.”

Mióptica offer wide range of sunglasses, with Oakley and Ray-Ban among the best sellers, but there are also some really high quality frames from Spanish designers such as Etnia or Carolina Herrera. “Fashion is also important,” says Daniel. “Many people like to be a little more adventurous on Lanzarote, and we sell all types of frames, from classic round lenses or aviators to thick frames that are on trend right now.”

To help you choose the perfect frame. Mióptica now offer Smart Shopper – a digital assistant that allows you to virtually try on Oakley and Ray-Ban frames as if you were in front of a mirror. You can even customise your own frames.

Mióptica also have some of the most up-to-date machinery for assessing vision and is a certified Varilux Ambassador, a distinction awarded to opticians that offer the very latest in progressive lenses.

Contact lenses are another speciality, and Mióptica now offer Orto-K lenses – the “pyjama contacts” that are worn the night before, allowing perfect vision without any aids on the following day.

Many of Mióptica’s customers are British residents and tourists here, and Daniel tells us they often comment on the huge variety of frames and colours that are available in the shop, compared with those at home. Speed is another factor: “We’re on an island, but we can have progressive lenses ready in four or five days,” says Daniel, “In fact, many people ask us to make the glasses here and send them to their homes.”

So if you’re looking for an optician in Playa Blanca, head to the specialists; head to Mióptica at 42 Calle El Correíllo.

Mióptica is open from 9.30 am to 2 pm and 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm each day; 10 am to 1.30 pm on Saturdays. Just pop in or call 928 518605 for more information.
