Diwali is one of the biggest festivals of the year in India, a time to celebrate new beginnings and rejoice in a sea of candlelight. Once again, Indian Delights in Playa Blanca invite you to join them in the celebrations.

Diwali is one of the most celebrated festivals in India, when households welcome the goddess Lakshmi into their homes with traditional lights and patterns made from powders, flowers, and candles. This year, it falls on October 24th.

Because Diwali is seen as the start of the New Year in the Hindu calendar, Hindu families will clean their houses, wear some of their finest traditional clothing, share traditional sweets and prepare the Diwali firecrackers.

Diwali at Indian Delights

Indian Delights will be bringing authentic 5-day Diwali celebrations to Playa Blanca for the third time since their opening in August 2020.

The restaurant will be starting the celebrations in style on the 24th October. You are welcomed by Ramesh and Saraswati to enjoy the delicious food and watch the opening Diwali fireworks display at 8:30 to 9:00 in the restaurant.

Indian Delights will, of course, be fully decorated with hundreds of Diyas (candles), Rangoli patterns, flowers and staff wearing traditional clothing.

Throughout the 5-day celebration traditional sweets will be given for free to customers, as they would be shared in Indian households.

If you want to come along to see how Diwali is done, Indian Delights traditional style, booking is highly recommended (call in to book before 6pm), which can be done via the restaurant’s Facebook page at ‘Indian Delights Lanzarote’, or by telephoning directly on: +34 686 010 125.

You may have seen Diwali decorations and traditional clothing before, but do you know the names?

Diya: A special oil lamp made from clay, used as decoration during Diwali. The name Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepavali (row of lights), “deep” meaning Diya and “vali” meaning row.

Kurta: A traditional Indian dress made of cotton or silk, often in colours reflecting the Diwali celebrations.

Rangoli: A large pattern made up of colourful powders, flowers and diyas. They vary from household to household as patterns and designs are passed down through the family.
