The Spanish Home Office are currently working on a mobile alert system that will notify residents of the Canary Islands to warn about upcoming emergencies or dangerous weather.

The development of a mobile alert system for the Canaries is underway at the moment, as a way for 112 emergency services to universally reach out to all residents in the event of an emergency.

By the end of the year the Spanish Home Office hope to have the mobile alert system up and running. Emergency services will be able to send out a universal message to residents, warning about anything from heavy rains, strong winds, a tsunami or even the event of another volcanic eruption.

The 112 Regional Director, Moisés Sánchez, highlighted that “it would have served the emergency services, and the affected residents of La Palma, if we had had this system in place.”

As far as privacy goes, the emergency services will not have access to any residents data as the system will notify mobile companies to then send a notification to the phones of residents.

It will appear as any text would, and will not disappear until the user has acknowledged the alert.
