Lanzarote is under level 3 measures from today, after the Canarian Government held a special meeting yesterday.

Canarian President Ángel Victor Torres announced that Level 3 measures apply from today, 2nd March and will continue until March 8th, when a new assessment will be made.

During the announcement, President Torres caused confusion by initially announcing that the island would go to level 2. Although he later corrected himself, Lanzarote is on course to reach this level by the time of the next assessment, although the high number of patients in the island’s intensive care units remains the main obstacle to this.

The news came on a day when Lanzarote registered no Covid cases at all – the first time this has occurred since mid-December.

Lanzarote has already had two weeks experience of Level 3, which it entered on January 15th until 29th January, when the Canarian Government was forced to create an even stricter Level 4 to address spiralling infection rates on the island.

Level 3 measures are still strict, as this level is classed as “high risk”, but the most welcome change will be the fact that bars may remain open until 10pm, allowing people to dine out or drink in the evening once again. In practice, many establishments will shut at 9 or 9.30 to give clients the chance to return home before the curfew starts.

Level 3 measures

Border closure

Travel on and off the island (to other Canary Islands) is forbidden except for “justifiable causes”.

Curfew

A curfew will be in operation from 10 pm to 6 am each night. Travel between this hours will only be permitted for “justified causes”.

Limits on gatherings

Public and private gatherings of up to four people who do not live in the same household are permitted.

Bars and restaurants

Bars and restaurants must close by 10 pm, and it is forbidden to serve customers indoors except in certain special cases (such as hotel dining rooms used only by guests). A limit of 4 people is permitted at any table.

Sports

Indoor sports are forbidden. Outdoor sports may be carried out individually , only when social distancing can be guaranteed.

Visits

Hospital visits are cancelled for all patients except children, pregnant women and the terminally ill. Care home outings are suspended and visits to elderly care home residents strictly limited.

Public transport

The maximum capacity of buses remains 50%.
