Five restaurants in Playa Honda, Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife have closed temporarily as a precaution, after possible exposure to coronavirus.
Three establishments in Playa Honda: the Patagonia Grill, Goliath and Mesona, closed after their owner tested positive for Covid-19. Although no further cases have been detected, the immediate decision of the owner to close the restaurants in order to protect his staff and customers has been praised.
In Puerto del Carmen, the Vino + restaurant also closed its doors as a precautionary measure, while Arrecife’s popular La Miñoca bar by the Charco de San Ginés has also closed after some staff were at another bar where a positive case has been confirmed.
Seven new cases of coronavirus were confirmed on the island yesterday, five of which were local residents and two Spanish tourists. None of the 30 active cases on the island are seriously ill, however, and all are in isolation at home.
If you think you are suffering from coronavirus symptoms or have been in contact with a confirmed case, call the Canarian coronavirus information line on 900 112 061 or contact your local health centre.
Demo for tougher animal cruelty laws
A demonstration in favour of toughening animal cruelty laws in Spain will take place next Monday, following the death of Timple, the street dog which suffocated after being tethered and having its muzzle taped by a couple in Costa Teguise.
The guilty couple were found guilty of animal cruelty and sentenced to four months in prison in July. However, as is standard in Spain with sentences of two years or under, the term was suspended as the perpetrators had no previous convictions.
The demonstration has been organised by Ademal, SARA and over 70 other animal associations. It will take place on Monday 17th August in front of the old Cabildo building in Arrecife’s Calle Real. Supporters are requested to wear masks and follow distancing requirements. Simultaneous demonstrations will also take place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
