A convoy of around 30 police cars and emergency vehicles paraded the streets of Arrecife on Monday evening in tribute to the work of health workers on the island. The parade passed along the seafront before heading to the Dr José Molina Orosa Hospital, with residents applauding from their balconies as the caravan passed.
The parade was repeated all over Spain, as a tribute to health workers. These employees are among those at highest risk of the coronavirus, and their #Quedateencasa (Stay At Home) campaign was very influential before the official lockdown was declared.
The Cabildo also announced the closure of the Punto Limpio waste disposal points on the island, and declared that operatives at the Zonzamas dump would no longer open sealed rubbish bags. It was explained that “the Punto Limpios are not involved with day-to-day activity, so their employees should not be put at risk”, and protecting rubbish sorters from risk was also the reason for keeping rubbish sealed.
The César Manrique Airport’s Terminal 1 will close from Wednesday, with the skeleton flight schedule remaining taking place from T2.
