Teguise will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the last volcanic eruption on Lanzarote on Wednesday 31st July.
The eruptions of 1824 commenced on 31st July, almost 100 years after the much greater eruptions of 1730-1736. The first volcano to appear was the one at Tao/Tiagua, followed by the Nuevo del Fuego/Chinero volcano and the volcano of Tinguatón.
At the time, bells were rung and cannons fired to warn the inhabitants, and many left their lands, never to return.
Next Tuesday, events will begin with a morning tour of the volcano departing from Tao’s Sociedad, where two talks will be given in the evening.
Meanwhile, Tuesday will also see the solemn Fiesta del Fuego at the church in Mancha Blanca, when thanks are offered for the sparing of the village in 1824. After this event, the image of the Virgin of Los Dolores in the church became known as Our Lady of the Volcanoes.
