The Ecologists In Action group has awarded Playa Blanca’s town beach a “black flag” in its annual report. The beach, which also has a Blue Flag for quality, has been closed for several days recently for sewage contamination.
Playa Blanca’s is one of 48 beaches in Spain to receive the black flag in the report, which criticises the touristification of the Canaries
The report also attacks the Oliva Beach and Tres Islas hotels in Fuerterventura, which are located in the protected dunes area south of Corralejo. It claims that “the Canarian Government, far from defending the common good, observing the law and restoring the ecosystem, has decided to back the interests of the offending company.”
The report claims that the ecological footprint of the Canaries is that of a territory 27 times greater than the area of the islands and calls for an “eco-tax” to offset the impact of overdevelopment.
