Visiting the Casa-Museo del Campesino

This complex of buildings in the very centre of Lanzarote is overlooked by Manrique’s 15m high monument to the Farm Worker. Visitors can buy unique souvenirs, see exhibitions and take part in traditional activities. Here’s what to expect when you visit.

The Casa-Museo del Campesino takes visitors on a trip through the architecture, agriculture, crafts and traditional gastronomy of the island. The site is Manrique’s tribute to the efforts of the farm workers on Lanzarote, who faced adverse conditions and struggles.

As you pull up to the centre the first thing to do is walk up to the monument itself – a towering white sculpture that you’re able to walk right up to and touch. From the sculpture you can see across the centre’s various buildings and sections.

Walking back to the main path you’ll enter a brilliant white centre that reflects the sunlight. Right in front of the steps down into the courtyard is a small restaurant. Turn to your right and follow the path and you’ll be led to the Mercado de Artesania (handicraft market).

The square features some local crafts shops that sell local products and offer crafts making workshops too.

Onto the hole in the floor of the square – take the staircase down and you’ll meet a small pool filled with plants. Following the path you’ll see a dramatically lit volcanic rock hallway with traditional clay pots displayed in downlit alcoves.

At the end of the hallway, you’ll reach the large dining hall that is frequently used by the local Ayuntamiento’s for dinners and celebratory lunches. It features skylights, plants and a large stage.

BOOKING INFORMATION

The Casa-Museo del Campesino is open every day from 10am until 6pm and takes approximately an hour to see it all.

Entry is free.
