Spain’s High Court has ruled against the creation of a fifth beach in Costa Teguise.
Plans to import over 20,500 cubic meters of sand from Africa, to create a new beach near the Los Ancones area of Costa Teguise have been rejected by Spain’s second highest court.
An appeal by the company that plans to build a five-star hotel in the area and create a beach was rejected on the grounds that “the construction of an artificial beach does not respond to a social demand for the use of beaches, since there are at least four beaches in the town , one of them natural, two artificial and a fourth where maritime works have been necessary to preserve the sand.”
The ruling also stated “ The intended artificial beach inevitably alters the environment and produces environmental effects and of course its construction cannot be possible if the existing ecosystems and habitats are not protected.”
The case is not yet over, as there is still the option for an appeal to the Supreme Court.
