Thousands of spectators headed to Playa de la Cucharas in Costa Teguise yesterday to see the air display held in honour of the resort’s 50th anniversary.
A Puma helicopter was exhibited before it took off and carried out a sea rescue simulation. This was followed by a skydive by nine paratroopers from the PAPEA (Acrobatic Parachute Patrol of the Spanish Air Force), who leapt from a C212 aircraft, unfolded a huge Canarian tricolour flag, and landed on the beach.
On land, PAPEA’s Captain Oumar Cheikh Larrocha explained that the flag measured 54 square metres and weighed 25 kilograms, and that it had been in the charge of soldier Estrada, from Tenerife. “For me, as a Canarian, it gives me goosebumps to see our beautiful colours in the sky,” he added.
Teguise Mayor Oswaldo Betancort thanked the Air Force and said he was “proud and honoured”.
